Everything You Should Know About User Experience Design｜Ariel Chang

The year of 2017 will see more and more people make UX design as their careers. Before stepping into this new world, it’s necessary to have an overall view of user experience design. In this article I will introduce UXD to you comprehensively, from its history to its benefits, and most of the ideas are based on Wikipedia’s explanation on “User Experience design”.
What Is User Experience Design?
User experience design, usually mentioned as UXD or UED, is the process of increasing the satisfaction people gets from a product by improving its usability, accessibility and creating interactions. The concept of UXD is broader than HCI, that is, human-computer interaction. There is no exaggeration to say that user experience design is involved in every step of a product development flow.
The History Of User Experience Design
It was Donald Norman, the famous user experience architect, who invented the term “User Experience Design”. The concept of UXD comes from human factors and ergonomics in 1940s, when people start to realize the pleasure brought by the interactions between human and machines. From 1990s, people started to pay more attention on user experience since the rapid increase of the number of personal computers. Before “user experience”, there had been “human interface and usability”, but Donald thought the phrase were too narrow. Finally he coined the term user experience, which he thought can cover all the aspects of people’s experience with system like machines and interfaces.
Main Elements of User Experience Design
Interaction design, information architecture, visual design, etc. are all elements of User Experience Design.
Interaction design, also called IxD, refers to the practice of designing interactive products, systems or services.
Information architecture is the science of organizing the information in a product to support its usability.
Visual design usually refers to graphic design. In graphic design, visual factors like color, image and icon are used in order to convey a message to its users.
UX Design Process
1st step: Researching about the targeted users and demand analysis
2nd step: collecting information
3rd step: sketch out the interaction framework (also known as wireframes)
4th step: programming and development
5th step: user testing
Benefits of User Experience Design
1. Avoiding some of the unnecessary features of a product
2. Ensuring the usability of a product and increasing the acceptance of it by users
3. Simplifying the design documentations

My friend Cynthia wasn’t a fan of social networking. It’s hard to find her in any online circle, except for Facebook, where she occasionally kills her time.
